  1. Overview

Lucky Plaza, situated along the bustling Orchard Road belt, is one of Singapore’s most iconic mixed-use developments. Like many commercial buildings in this low-lying topographies, the basement levels house essential services, retail outlets, and car park access points that are inherently vulnerable to water ingress. During periods of intense tropical rainfall—particularly the Northeast Monsoon surges—the volume of surface runoff on Orchard Road can overwhelm drainage capacity, creating a risk of ponding and flash floods. FloodX was engaged to mitigate this risk by fortifying the building's vulnerable access points. The primary objective was to implement a defense system that prevents water from entering the basement, thereby protecting valuable assets, mechanical and electrical (M&E) rooms, and ensuring the safety of tenants and visitors.
  1. Requirements & Challenges

The project required a solution that balanced robust protection with the operational constraints of a high-traffic shopping mall. Key requirements included:
  • Operational Efficiency: The barriers must be lightweight and capable of rapid deployment by limited manpower (security or facility staff) within minutes of a flood warning.
  • Minimal Disruption: Installation of the permanent side channels and ground thresholds had to be executed without obstructing the high footfall of daily shoppers or impeding emergency escape routes.
  • Aesthetics & Compatibility: The solution needed to integrate seamlessly with existing architectural features, such as glass doors and uneven manufacturing loading bays, without requiring major structural modifications.
  • Durability: Equipment must withstand the humid tropical environment and resist corrosion while remaining watertight under hydrostatic pressure.
  1. FloodX Solution

FloodX implemented a customized defense strategy utilizing demountable flood barriers. The process began with a comprehensive site survey to identify all potential water ingress points, measuring the exact dimensions of doorways, ramps, and service entrances. The solution involved installing permanent aluminium side channels into the building facade. These channels serve as the anchor points for the removable aluminium panels. During a flood alert, the interlocking panels are manually slotted into these channels and tightened to compress the EPDM seals, creating a watertight dam. The system was designed to be stored nearby, ensuring immediate accessibility.
